The mission of the Wisconsin Nurses Association
Wisconsin Nurses Association is nurses caring for nurses and nursing,
by preserving, supporting and advancing the profession of nursing.

The purposes of the Wisconsin Nurses Association
1. To foster high standards of nursing.
2. To stimulate and promote the professional development of nurses and advance their economic and general welfare.
3. To work for the improvement of health standards and the availability of health care services for all people.
These purposes shall be unrestricted by consideration of age, color, creed, disability, gender, health status, lifestyle, nationality, race, religion, or sexual orientation.

GOAL I:
COLLECTIVELY AND COLLABORATIVELY ADVOCATE FOR ACCESS TO COMPREHENSIVE QUALITY HEALTH CARE SERVICES FOR ALL PEOPLE.
Core Issues: Patient Safety and Advocacy
Appropriate Staffing
Objective A - Increase coalition building with other groups as a way to increase patient safety and prevention of adverse incidents within the health care system.
1. Develop and disseminate models of working with groups.
2. Identify groups we have worked with in the past and identify common concerns.
3. Continue to work with multiple groups to advocate for access to health care.
4. Disseminate WNA Public Policy Agenda to key stakeholders as a means of demonstrating
current positions and solicit input.
NEWDNA Actions:
1. Encourage members to disseminate the WNA Public Policy Agenda.
Objective B - Monitor health care initiatives on a regulatory and legislative level.
1. Educate policy makers on health care issues.
2. Review, take positions, publish/disseminate positions on state and federal legislative and regulatory issues.
3. Encourage sponsorship of legislative forums.
4. Support state and federal legislative issues that protect long term care initiatives.
5. Monitor health care compensation methods.
6. Support benefit packages information that is consumer friendly.
7. Support full disclosure of information to clients about health care options that could influence treatment decisions.
NEWDNA Actions:
1. Sponsor a Legislative Breakfast twice per year.
2. Encourage members to attend A Day at the Capitol.
3. Provide legislative updates at General Membership Meetings.
4. Participate in children’s voting activities.
Objective C - Advocate for Accountability for Safe Quality Care.
1. Promote Nursing
’s Quality Indicators and ANCC Nurse Magnet Program.2. Collaborate in efforts to increase patient safety and prevent adverse incidents.
3. Foster research in the areas of WNA
’s Core Issues.4. Support and promote use of ANA
’s "Principles for Safe Staffing".5. Support and promote use of WNA
’s position on Nurse Staffing and Quality of Care.6. Encourage development and use of tools other than hours per patient day to determine staffing levels.
7. Publish articles and information in STAT, WNA website and NursingMatters to keep nurses informed.

1. Offer continuing education programs that emphasize patient safety and prevention of adverse incidents.
2. Publish articles and information in PRN and on NEWDNA web site to keep nurses informed.
3. Network with members in efforts to increase patient safety and prevent adverse incidents.
Objective D - Advocate for Patients/Populations.
1. Support the Women
’s Health Initiative.2. Support programs to decrease community, workplace, and domestic abuse and violence.
3. Support initiatives that attempt to reduce youth smoking.
4. Support initiatives that promote quality and comprehensive palliative and end of life care.
Identify researchers in the state who are doing research relating to the core issues.

GOAL II:
ASSURE THAT THE REGISTERED NURSE IS AN ESSENTIAL PROVIDER IN ALL PRACTICE SETTINGS THROUGH EDUCATION, RESEARCH, WORKPLACE ADVOCACY, LEGISLATION AND REGULATION.

Objective A - Monitor Board of Nursing activities regarding regulations and legislation related to title Registered Nurse and practice of nursing.
1. Promote title protection.
2. Be a resource to the Board of Nursing.
3. Educate and clarify nurse delegation to student and licensed RN
’s using "Nurse Delegation Guidelines".NEWDNA Actions:
1. Promote the use of the title, Registered Nurse.
Objective B - Promote the image of Registered Nurses as essential providers.
1. Monitor RN supply needs including type.
2. Promote the image of RN/Nursing.
3. Promote direct and equitable reimbursement for nursing services in all payment plans and settings.
4. Support marketing efforts that promote consumer access to nurse providers.
NEWDNA Actions:
1. Sponsor Annual Nurses Day Celebration in May.
2. Encourage use of the NEWDNA web site to members and the public.
3. Promote media coverage of the Annual Nurse of the Year Award.
Objective C - Collaborate with other groups to evaluate and influence the supply and demand for Registered Nurses.
1. Increase number and availability of Registered Nurses in education and practice.
2. Increase enrollment in Nursing Education programs.
3. Improve education/training opportunities.
4. Increase retention rates for Registered Nurses (in the profession; in the workplace).
5. Improve workplace satisfaction levels among Registered Nurses.
6. Ongoing reassessment and adjustment of the educational and practice environment to facilitate meeting demands for Registered Nurses today and in the future.

1. Promote Unity Night (a gathering of professional nursing organizations) to members and other registered nurses.
Objective D - Promote and support the use of nursing research that demonstrates the contributions of professional nursing practice.
1. Support nursing research.
2. Support research dissemination.

1. Offer continuing education programs on nursing research conducted by members and other registered nurses.
Objective E - Participate in shaping the future of professional nursing.
1. Support nursing scholarships.
2. Support nursing education programs.
3. Support state and national initiatives.
4. Support mentoring.
5. Seek representation in the appropriate arenas (including state and national initiatives) to represent nursing.
6. Support nurse redesign efforts that promote quality, safe, accessible and affordable health care

1. Establish a Speakers Bureau of topics of interest to professionals and the public.
Objective F - Promote a Nurse Friendly, Safer, Healthier Workplace through Workplace Advocacy Services.
1. Reduce needlestick/sharps injuries by encouraging the use of protective devices and reporting of injuries.
2. Promote availability, and correct and consistent use of assistive device to reduce back injuries.
3. Educate nurses and patients on the creation of a latex-safe environment.
4. Educate nurses about their rights under the whistleblower legislation.
5. Reduce workplace violence through a variety of educational programs.
6. Establish ways to disseminate and evaluate a workplace Advocacy plan.
7. Provide one-on-one support to nurses that promote self-advocacy.
NEWDNA Actions:
1. Promote continuing education programs that address the changing environment of the nurse.
Objective G - Foster continued competencies in professional nursing practice.
1. Promote certification.
2. Offer continuing education programs.
3. Monitor and explore models for continued competencies.
4. Collaborate with groups having a mutual interest in promoting nurse competency.

1. Encourage members to consider certification with ANA and other professional nursing specialty organizations.
2. Promote Unity Night (a gathering of professional nursing organizations) to members and other registered nurses.

GOAL III:
PROMOTE THE EXISTENCE OF WNA AS A MULTIPURPOSE ORGANIZATION, WHICH WILL CONTINUE TO BE STRONG AND EFFECTIVE AT THE STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELS.
Core Issues:
Objective A - Consistently retain 90% of members each year.
1. Develop a membership profile.
2. Support professional development.
3. Enhance methods of communicating with members.
NEWDNA Actions:
1. Support efforts of the Marketing/Public Relations Committee.
2. Encourage members to be active in NEWDNA.
3. Distribute NEWDNA Membership Directory.
4. Continue to keep NEWDNA Membership Directory up-to-date.
5. Promote the professional development of NEWDNA members by providing timely and relevant continuing education activities.
6. Promote communication and networking of members through the PRN, the NEWDNA web site, and sharing time at meetings.
Objective B - Increase WNA membership by at least 5% each year for the next 5 years.
1. Actively promote WNA the Right Choice member recruitment campaign.
2. Continue the new grad initiatives.
3. Support ongoing collaboration with student nurses at district and state levels.

Objective C - Promote the multi-purpose nature of WNA by addressing the diverse needs of Registered Nurses.
