LEGISLATIVE ALERT

APNP Statute "Clean Up"

The Wisconsin Nurses Association has identified a variety of state statutes in which the inclusion of the APNP is needed to codify existing practice. This legislative initiative is necessary to assure on-going access, cost-effective and quality health care services for the citizens of Wisconsin. Medicaid and Medicare reimburses for services rendered by the APRN for these services but state statutes do not reflect these authorized services. Senator Judy Robson and Senator Rob Cowles will be introducing the APNP Statute "Clean Up" for Advanced Practice Nurse Prescribers in the Senate in the next few weeks. Currently, the bill is being circulated in the Senate for co-sponsorship. The WNA is requesting that you contact your state Senator and urge them to sign on to LRB 2175. We have also enclosed a fact sheet on the statute changes that we want to have changed.

Talking Points

Advanced Practice Nurse Prescribers have statutory authority to order laboratory and diagnostic tests, prescribe medications based on their education, training, experience, credentials, and state certification.

Medicaid and Medicare reimburses for services rendered by the APRN for these services but state statutes do not reflect these authorized services.

We need you to contact your state senators, in particular the members of the Senate Health, Children, Families, aging and Long Term Care Committee, (please see below for the list of Health committee members). If you do not know who your legislator is please visit www.legis.state.wi.us and click on Who are my legislators, fill in your address information. The website will then direct you to the names of your legislators. Click on the name of the Senator and the contact information will load onto your screen.

If you have any questions, please contact Tiffany Richards at the WNA office (608) 221-0383 or via e-mail tiffany@wisconsinnurses.org. Please notify WNA if you have contacted your legislators. In addition, if you are interested in presenting testimony on how the specific areas have affected your practice, please contact Tiffany. WNA is hoping to have APNP’s testify on each of the sections either alone or with their collaborating physician. WNA NEEDS your help to pass this legislation. Remember this is YOUR practice and you have the power to ensure your voice is heard.
